The relative retention of strontium and calcium in human bone tissue.

چکیده
The production of radiostrontium in relatively high yield from fission reactions, together with the aflinity of strontium for bone, have added to the need for a quantitative understanding of the behavior of this element in the food chain leading to human bone. The quantity of this fission product which may be maintained in the bone tissue without perceptible damage to the organism is not well defined (1, 2) ; however, with the anticipated increase in the use of fission reactors both in the United States and abroad (3) together with the threat of an extensive dispersal of fallout material from nuclear warfare, the importance of radiostrontium as a hazard in our environment is increasing. In a previous paper on the relative retention of strontium and calcium in animal bone tissue (4) it was suggested that the equilibrium level of radiostrontium in human bone might be predicted from a knowledge of the retention factor between diet and human bone and the specific activity of radiostrontium in the diet. The purpose of this paper is to present the results of a study of the relationship between the strontium in the human diet and the quantity of strontium appearing in human bone.

The relative retention of strontium and calcium in bone tissue.
The presence of strontium in the bone tissue of vertebrates has been reported by a number of investigators (l-6), although at least two workers found none in the samples analyzed (7, 8). The behavior of strontium in the animal body is of some interest, for, although its metabolic fate is very similar to that of calcium, it cannot supplant calcium in the diet without causing severe disturbances ...
متن کاملIleal Digestibility and Bone Retention of Calcium in Diets Containing Eggshell, Oyster Shell or Inorganic Calcium Carbonate in Broiler Chickens
This study was conducted to compare ileal digestibility of calcium, dry matter and ash, growth performance, gut characteristics, bone parameters and retention of calcium in broiler chickens fed diets containing different calcium sources. A total of 96 commercial Ross 308 broiler chickens were allocated to three experimental diets. The experimental diets included a diet containing inorganic calc...
متن کاملMeasurement of Strontium-90 in the Persian Gulf Fish by Extraction Chromatography with Sr-resin and Liquid Scintillation Counter
Background: Despite its beneficial effects on human life, the nuclear industry has its own risks. Strontium 90 (90Sr) is one of the most dangerous radionuclides produced by the uranium 235 fission, and replaces the bone calcium in the human body, which causes cancer. Ensuring the safety of nuclear facilities to protect employees, people and the environment is among the main goals of nuclear saf...
متن کاملDevelopment of an Age- and Gender-specific Model for Strontium Metabolism in Humans
This paper presents a development of a new biokinetic model for strontium, which accounts for age and gender differences of metabolism in humans. This model was developed based on the long-term follow-up of the residents living on the banks of the Techa River (Southern Urals, Russia) contaminated with Sr in 1950-1956. The new model uses the structure of ICRP model for strontium but model parame...
متن کاملGilan Iron Age Diet: Results based on chemical analysis on samples of human and animal bones
Trace element analyses was carried out using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer and XRF on a small collection of bones and teeth from horse and human bone samples to check the ratio of strontium and calcium and other elements like zinc and copper. Interestingly the copper representation in humans is much higher compared to that of Sr/Ca. This shows that their diet consisted mainly of animal me...
